Buy any VIVO Card, and plug the video out on the VCR to the VIVO cards and away you go, It will automatically be able to record what you play on the VCR, Ive done it before, and some of the older VCR have the out put's. You can even use a old play station 1 Scart to RCA to get it all on computer, Windows movie maker will work for getting the video onto the Computer.

Look in to buying a AV 2 DV converter like the ADVC55/110, this will take your analogue video feeds lock the audio and video together and convert it to easy to edit DV and send it to your PC via a 6 pin firewire connection. The 55 is capture only and the 110 is bi-directional. If you don't have 6 pin firewire in the PC it is a simple pci card and costs about £15.

Avoid USB2 capture devices.

IMHO any of the video editing tools have a bit of a learning curve and your uncle might give up in disgust.

First step is to get an a2v converter... either a card or a usb device.

Then to edit... Pinnacle is fine for a hobbyist. I tried Ulead, it was ok. I tried Mediacreator... ok. Windows Movie Maker (snicker). I'm currently using Pinnacle 10.6. Tell your uncle to pay attention to the tutorials and he should be ok.

Go for a firewire converter, NOT USB, firewire is the standard for video transfer and if you look through the forum you will find many people complaining about poor performance form USB capture/converter devices.
