Stills frm video editing

HI
I have been editing video to produce still pictures using Sonic My video and a pinnacle external card (to transfer the video to my HD). When I have selected the frame to save as the still it takes an age to format and save the still (in JPG format). The video files are an hour long.

Can I speed up the process by using alternative hardware/software? Any recommendatins greatfully received.
