Letterbox bars don't show up on my TV.

I bought a Digital 8 camcorder with a 16:9 widescreen setting. When I set it to 16:9, the image widens when the bars appear, but the bars disappear and the image gets "squashed" in the eyecup viewfinder or when the camera is hooked up to a regular screen TV. Help!
