Recommend 4-4 firewire cable only to ensure connection safety. 6-4 cable may giggle loose and cause shorting pins to transmit current from firewire card to camcorder, and poof it i-link will blow. If that happens, it won't heal. Be extra careful when inserting cable in camcorder (don't bend the pins -- never force the connection).

You are Correct, it is safer to use the firewire cable that has only 4 pin type on both ends.
I fried my camcorder ilink, because i accidentally plug the 6 pin type in a wrong orientation.
Be sure to CORRECTLY plug the 6 pin into your computer FIRST and double check visually. before plugging the 4 pin into your camcorder. This way it does not matter if your computer and camcorder are turned on or not, it is truly plug and play.
Now we just have to find where this firewire chips are in the camcorder, maybe desolder and replace them. I read somewhere in australia a fellow repaired the firewire link in his laptop by replacing a chip that cost only $10.00.

Replacing requires disassembly of the camcorder (farily extensive). Talk about opening a can of worms. Not recommended. Have a professional shop do the the job (cost you $150 or more I'll bet). Or just buy a used camcorder to playback on your computer. That might even be best. On eBay, their selling some as low as $100. So why not just do that instead -- I did. I love my DCR-TRV730, but have to use a cheapy DCR-TRV103 to transfer on to computer since the 730s i-Link is blown.

Also of course, it saves head wear and hours on your decent camera. I do the same with a camera I dropped and that fails to record properly now. Plays back like dream still, so all the captue goes though it.

Sade day today, problems here with i-link. Put it in like always and no Beep ? no connection from cam to pc. I tryed other pc, nope, nothing.
Tryed other firewire cable, nothing . Tryed everyway to get a connection to pc, noway José. . Problems now, what about my edit i have to finnish ????. What is the solution??? repear cam? buy new one ? repear the pc, i really have no idea. i really want to smach a hammer init, but no fear, its to expecief to do that.
Still, i have a major problem :( i can't work and the 12the i have a wedding to film . what the heck i have to do

somebody has a solution? pls.
