Default Help a newbie

Hi Everyone:
I'm fairly new to the whole video capturing thing and was looking for some advice. I recently purchased an XTV 2.0 Video capture device for use with my pc, as I have many video tapes I wanted to convert to dvd. I've been able to capture video but although it previews perfectly when I playback my captured video it is very grainy and has lines across it, what a term "video head noise". I've tried recording off of a high quality tape but I still get the same result. So after some research, I came to realise that a TBC device was needed to prevent this problem of overscanning but everyone I've come across has been about £200 and I cannot afford that as I'm only doing this for family.

So has anybody come across a TBC device that does an adequate job that does not cost the earth?
Or is it because I'm doing something wrong or using the wrong software?

Please help a newbie out
Thanks in advance
