Default External Hard Drive messing with picture??

I just got a new Western Digital 250 GB external Hard Drive (with firewire) to store my videos and music. When I copy my video (in avi. format) to and from the drive, I get blocks of color all over the picure during playback. This doesn't happen to mpeg files. I'm thinking it's a size issue since the avi's are so much larger, but that shouldn't be an issue unless I'm mistaken. Any ideas?

I have the same drive, except it's a USB 2.0 connection. I've never tried what you're talking about (I use it purely for archiving and if I want to do something with the files on there, I copy them back to my internal hard drive) - I'll try and remember this evening and let you know how I get on.

Well, I tried it. The biggest .avi file I could find on the USB 2.0 external drive was 4.5GB, and it played flawlessly (on Media Player). So I'm stumped... :(
