No, it shouldn't have rebooted :-S

OK, best thing to do in this situation - go back to that page and download the "desktop" version. It will download a program. When you run that program you'll need two floppy disks. oot your PC from teh first floppy disk and follow the instructions to do a generic full test.

Let us know what happens

Okay I did it...and the results are not good. It showed 9 bad sectors--obviously it failed the test. I did not have the program fix the problems because I didn't want to lose any files. What do you think?

Sometimes bad sectors aren't a problem, but considering all the issues you've been having, it looks like it could be pointing towards a faulty hard drive. What did the report say exactly? Did it fail the surface scan with physical errors? If so, looks like you might be up for a new hard drive.

I'm not sure. When I selected the print results option, it didn't have any details under the results. So I didn't print it. However, on the summary, it showed the big red dot next to my hard drive test. I did select the save option, but I can't get to it from windows. Can I reboot my PC again with the disc in it to get more details about the test?

I thought the bad hard drive was bad enough--so I didn't run the test on the motherboard. Should I have?

Okay, I re-ran the full test and got a printout of the results. I'm not sure what I'm looking at though. It says the following sectors showed errors and may be damaged: 16858550, 168... and so on, with 30 individual sectors showing damage.

That doesn't sound good, does it?

I tell you what - on the result, what brand hard drive does it say it is?

You might be able to download a brand-specific test to get a more definite report.

I don't see a spcific brand name. I'll just tell you what I see:
Model #: ST380020A
Serial #: 5GC196MG
ID Method: CSEL
I don't know how you would figure it out from that, so if you want me to take the PC cover off and just look for a brand name, I can do that too. I'll be awaiting your instructions.

Ahhh.. ST is Seagate Technologies

Luckily, you will be able to run the actual full (non-generic) test on the disc.

This is what the online test said:
Test result: Self-test routine completed with a S.M.A.R.T. alert error!
The Drive Self-Test has determined that the drive may have one or more failing sectors. Please run SeaTools Desktop for additional information about this problem. [I did this which showed the 30 errors]
Any drive reporting a S.M.A.R.T. error should be considered likely to fail at any time. You should back up your data from any such drive as soon as possible. Contact your computer or hard drive vendor to obtain return information.

I've already checked and the computer is no longer warranted. Can the Sea Tools website help repair the drive? If, not, what next?

By the way, thanks for guiding me through every step:)
