Lacie D2 external SATA harddrive 10K rpm - what d'you think?

Thinking of getting a Lacie D2 external SATA drive for my laptop (will need a external SATA adapter PCMCIA/Card bus card, see below also)

It runs at 10000rpm !!! Fastest external hard drive I've seen with an access time of 6ms

74Gb is small but still enough to get quite a bit of footage on. Combine this with my internal laptop 60Gb 7K60 7200rpm Hitachi hard drive.

What do you think?

Smells like a WD Raptor in an external HDD enclosure. Would be cheaper (and more sensible) to hook up a firewire external drive enclosure and fit a 300GB HDD.

Would you get the performance running through firewire though? Surely you'd be best sticking to SATA?

In terms of data transfer rates, SATA is theoretically quicker at 150MB/s compared to 50MB/s for firewire. However, it's whether the actual drive can handle that speed.

If you're going to use it for rendering real time effects/transitions, and you want speed and performance over space, then go for it. Personally (at 250 quid), I'd much prefer to get oodles of space for my bucks and wait a few more seconds for a render. 74GB is paltry, and quite frankly a bizarre choice of drive for an external option.
