I guess there's a lot of options - but I use TMPGenc Express - nice cheap program and it does most of the grunt work in editing, converting and rendering down the source.
Hope this is of help ...

Hi2all,
Have this 50 hours of Hi-8 material that is waiting for a new edit to 1 hr.
The equipment, I presently have is a computer with line-in, video-in, firewire,
100 gigs of HD and it can burn double sided DVDs.
Thatīs it and nothing else.
The video I have, can be divided into chapters. Each chapter say in 5 minutes
after editing and 2-3 Hrs. of raw footage.
How do I compress and edit these 50 Hrs. logically, so that i give out the
least for additional equipment and still can get optimum quality?
Thanks for your reply.
