Hi all,
I have had this problem with both Avid XpressDV and Adobe Premier so think it is Hardwae or driver related rather than Editing software.
Basically, I am editing on a laptop with 1 built in firewire port (Texas Instruments Chipset) and have connected the camera to this port. I have a Lacie HardDisk and have used a Firewire PCI Cardbus (NEC Chipset) to connect this to the laptop.
When capturing all is fine but when I want to play back the footage the connection to the HardDrive gets lost and Premier freezes. In windows explorer the LACIE drive disappeares and even if I unplug and re-connect it, it will not show up untill I re-boot the system.
If I connect the HardDisk to the laptop built in port it works fine.
An suggestions?

Sounds like the drive's losing power. Is it powered by the firewire socket? Can you power it externally?

The drive is powered externally and does not loose power. It works fine when using the laptops own firewire port but when connected to the PCMCIA firewire card it loses connection. Has anyone heard any compatability issues reguarding NEC chipset cards and Texas Instruments Chipset cards???
