Default dropping frames, need help!

When i try to send video footage from my digital camcorder into my PC through firewire, i get dropped frames. What is going on? this is really annoying, ive heard of people with lower system specs being able to send video perfectly. I got 512MB fram, a Pentium 4 1.8ghz processer, whats the deal??? I have a Sony TRV350 camcorder and getting dropped frames using different video editing softwares of all types, most recently Adobe Premiere Pro.
