Advice on editing setup?

It's time I upgraded my desktop and I would prefer to go the laptop route, are these specs upto video editing? With a mini dv camera for smallish projects.

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
Processor Type Intel Pentium Dual-Core
Processor speed 2.2Ghz
Memory Size 4096 MB
Hard Drive Capacity 320 GB
Screen Size/Type 17.3"
Graphics Card Type Integrated GMA 4500
No. of Firewire Connections 1

I think laptops are restrictive in a technical sense, perfect for on the move editing though.

I think if your after a dedicated system, you be better of with a desktop PC, as there more expandable and upgradeable. So you can keep up to date, if its a lappy you need then consider a quad if you think you may do HD in the future.

Also how much have you got to spend?

I only work with a laptop for editing as it provides the ultimate in flexibility. I edit with DV downcoverted from AVCHD (combines the ease of editing in DV with the ease of transfer and tapeless mechanisms of AVCHD).

That specification will work fine with DV, but as Zandebar says, it's not going to be future proof.

I'm not too worried about that, because upgrading all the time is a waste of money because technology soon supersedes what ever you have just bought! And I want more of my moneys worth out of the mini dv and as I understand to get the same specs with a new format will cost!

Get the best system for your budget; if you prefer a laptop then go for a laptop.
if its a desktop system go for that.

You a choosing a system to do a job, as long as it does that job then your happy...

Computers change every six months; so if you wait for the next best thing then you'll end up not buying a system.

I disagree with you that upgrading is a waste of money, its cheaper than buying a new laptop.
Or a complete new system. Money spent in a methodical way, upgrading is well spent.
Thats if you need the upgrade, if you have loads of money and can afford to buy new systems.
Go for it; but if you haven't and want to keep upto date with the latest and have good performance, then scheduled upgrades are functional.

Whats your budget and are you going to do Hi Def ? as this will have a barring on your spec.

Also what software do you plan to use on it? besides the OS....

A low budget, for the reasons given and Hi Def is a low priority. A laptop is more of a priority!

Not sure, as my favourite is Ulead Ms Pro, but that's only XP!

How long do you intend to use the laptop for ?

How do you intend to use the laptop; is it a hobby, your a film student ?

Your intention does have a barring on you spec, And yet again please post your budget for laptop.
