I purchased a shotgun mic intended for camcorders and I own two JVC camcorders, bought at a cheap price on eBay, neither of which have an input socket for a mic to plug in.
Now I am considering opening (arggh!) either the D370U or the DVL305 to either fit a socket in the body or drill a hole in the side for two lead wires. I also have a Tascam Digital Recorder so this rework is not necessary, but I am considering it.
Does anyone have experience of doing such work on a camcorder, or am I going to find a nightmare when I eventually open the guts.

Personally I wouldnt try this unless I knew for sure how to do it and that it would work - proceed with caution and be ready to accept the death of a camcorder calmly.

Are you an electronics whizzkid? Can you handle a soldering iron? Do you have circuit diagrams for the inside of your camcorders? As neither of your camcorders have mic in sockets, that means you will have to solder a connection to the main circuit board on both where audio is controlled, run a wire(s) to a hole made on the chassis and put a mic socket in aswell... seems like an awful lot of work.

Actually, Yes I am and I can but No I dont have a diagram.
Really, of more concern is the zillions of tiny tiny screws holding it all together.
Here's how far I have gotten...
No, seriously - read this amusing article about camcorders http://jimthompson.org/wp/2006/01/09/whats-inside-a-jvc-camcorder/
In fact I have decided to buy a field audio recorder and do it that way and then add the audio track in post-production. This background noise really only became apparent while videotaping in a crowd. And a shotgun should be usefull in many areas.
