Default Widescreen editing question

Q: The Sony Camcorder I'm purchasing isn't a 16:9 widescreen which is a bit of a dissapointment because I love widescreen films. Anyway, do you think I could re-sculpture the picture into a widescreen using the correct editing software? If so, will it lose a lot of screen resolution and which is the best software to use?

Thanks.

Certainly you can! (but I wouldn't)

It most certainly will degrade the picture quality. To take a 4:3 picture and make it widescreen youwill effectively have to digitally zoom the image - this always reduces quality.

Just about any NLE will allow a digital zoom.

My advice is that given you haven't actually bought it yet and appreciate the difference then buy a different camera.
