By some reason, tags are not recognized by this forum's engine and it's very inconvenient to read. I guess responsible person will note that and take action. Although there is no warning in the manual about "hotlinking" the camcorder to the computer when you connect the two with a firewire or, as Sony calls it, iLink) cable, it seems that this can and, in a lot of cases does, "cook" the firewire port of the camcorder. |
this sounds like reasonable explanation. although it's INDEED not in the manual, and not even on their website (i was performing their steps that they placed on esupport.sony.com - and it was nothing said about it), I at some point in time stumbled upon note to connect both devices while they were powered down. but again it wasn't any kind of official and authoritative source.
You say: If your Sony Handycam DCR-HC96 is still under warranty then I do not see why Sony shouldn't fix or replace the unit. |
and then you say: This is not a software or computer problem but it is a weakness in the Sony Camcorders’ port. I believe that a repair would coy somewhere round $300! |
i didn't understand: do i HAVE to pay for repair or NOT? A solution is to use the USB connection and if you received Image Mixer with you camcorder you can control the camera from the computer. However, you cannot print to the tape. Some reports say that the quality using USB instead of firewire is not as good. I honestly cannot see the difference but I am no expert on the finer points of video quality. |
Well, everybody claims that picture transferred over Firewire is better and better than that transferred over USB. What i can say from my own experience, is that i wasn't able to transfer video over USB at resolution better than 320x240 with Sony's native software! although i was able using third party software to achieve 640x480 resolution, but it was using disk space like crazy, and I gave up on that app.
Thanks very much for this update.

It's not obvious from post what brand the cameras are - are they both Sony's different models? Or different brands? That would be interesting to know if not only Sony's camcorders are subject to this issue. I was advised that there might be a hardware problem with i.Link port on the camera itself. By luck I happen to have VAIO for several days and want to hook my camera to it. This I'll do tomorrow. I'll let you know the results.

I have tried it with a JVC and a Cannon - neither work. I am actually crying now because I have spent since last Wednesday trying to fix the problem. The Tech Guys can't help (deal with all computers/software/hardware) Microsoft can't help after spending 3 hours on the phone; JVC won't help. I have done a full destructive recovery, uninstalled all hardware. I have lost a thousand pounds of business because a can't edit on Adobe (who also won't/can't help). I don't know what to do. Please can somebody help. Please don't suggest getting rid of SP2 because I can't as it came installed.

I have a similar problem with a Sony DCR TRV310 Digital 8 Handycam.
In a few words: The camera is detected in a notebook with XP SP2 running at 900 Mhz and I can both export and import video from it via firewire.
The same notebook with a JVC GRDV3U doesn´t export to the camcorder, however I can capture to the notebook with no problem.
But when I try to capture using a desktop PC with XP SP2 with an AMD DUO processor running at 3 Ghz, the Sony camcorder isn´t detected but the JVC one can export to the PC and import to the camera with no problem.
The Sony camcorder plugged into the same PCI 1394 card ( a PYRO one) but running in an old AMD 500 Mhz desktop PC running W 98SE worked fine.
So... Does anybody have any explanation?
Thanks in advance !!!!

Hi all,
excuse my silence.
returning to previous attempt with VAIO laptop. NO, I wasn't successful. I installed Sony Vegas 7d, with no results.
Eventually I had to open a claim with my repair warranty provider, and at this moment in time I'm going through the hassle with them. It'll settle in couple of days, and hopefully by next week I'm going to have my camera back fixed.
I'm looking forward to obtaining fixed and functioning camera from them. I'll try to post on that one here.
Good luck to you in your own efforts!

Exactly same problem here with Sony PC105 - never have been able to get in recognised. If you have had any successful responses would be very inbterested.
