I have a sony handycam and firewire port. I can capture fine but I have to watch the video to capture it. Is there a way I can just download the video from my camcorder instead of waiting for it to play the whole video?

No, you have to play it into the pc in real time. Some expensive pro cameras can have hard drives attatched to them to avoid this and there are a few consumer hd camcorders around.

Senalyzer allows you to capture in FF mode (providing you are using timecode capture, which if a MiniDV camera - you are). http://www.scenalyzer.com/

That appears to scan and index the shots on the tape to speed caturing but it appears actual capturing is still real time.
That panasonic hdv cam at about 5000 quid also records to big ram cards, also there are 500 quid compact cameras that use sd cards and mpeg 4 compression. These give acceptable resluts but they are not as good as dv.
