Default MPEG-2 files causing computer to crash

My friend used his Hitachi Mini-DVD cam to film some clips and then exported to his computer and put them on a CD for me to edit. They are .mpg files in MPEG2 format. However, when i open them from the CD, they play, but i get a box saying Windows media player / Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. This happens in every video player, and also Windows Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere. I'm stumped as to what the problem is, anyone have any ideas? We have tried numerous CDs so i dont think the CD data is becoming corrupt.

Thanks for any help
Noori.

Probally has something to do with what codec you using to view the DVD.

Any ideas of how to sort it/what codecs i need? I have MPEG-2 (in the k-lite pack). I'm not viewing the DVD directly, im using the CD he gave me with .mpg files in.

Try uninstalling K-Lite and using this pack: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm.

Tell me what happens after that. If it doesn't work, upload a portion of the video on http://www.rapidshare.de, and post the link.
