| | Background Noise when video editing I am new to video recording/editing and I had a problem using Ulead VS 9 with background noise interfering with the original voice recording after transferring from camera to PC using a USB 2 connection. The background noise did not exist when replaying direct from the camera. I submitted a question to the Ulead Forum and got several helpful answers ( http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtop...?p=64612#64612) some I could understand some I am afraid were too technical and basically the problem persisted. I then stumbled across Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 and downloaded the trial version - surprise, surprise the background noise was virtually non-existent after transfer to my PC. The problem is that being only a trial version it records in AVI (and the size of my hour long recording is scary) but I cannot transfer this to MPEG for saving either as a file or to CD/DVD - to do this I have to buy the full copy which I am willing to do but I am concerned in case I do this and the noise returns when the file is compressed. Advice on this and Vegas Movie Studio 6 will be appreciated. |

| | ALL transfers should ALWAYS be done via firewire. See if the problem persists then, most problems people have when using usb dissapear with firewire.

| | Mark,
Many thanks, I do not have a firewire connection so have posted the following under Hardware,
I am going to have to purchase a Firewire PCI card and cable to enable me to transfer data from my camcorder to PC (see Background Noise under Software question and Mark's response). I shall be installing it myself so please can I have advice on what people recommend I should buy (type and items) or look out for. My Dell manual is pretty complete when it comes to installing a PCI card and I am confident I can manage it OK but again any hints will be appreciated. Unfotunately I do not have any specialist shops in my area other than PC World.
Thanks

| | Good stuff. I really think there should be a 'firewire yes, usb no' banner at the top of this forum...

| | To MarkW "ALL transfers should ALWAYS be done via firewire."
"I really think there should be a 'firewire yes, usb no' banner at the top of this forum..."
BUT what if one is capturing from analog camcorder that doesn't have a firewire port? Only to USB??????
Are we all consigned to the graveyard?
This is a great forum that I just found...........hoping to learn a lot.
Thanks..... |

| | USB really isn't fast or reliable enough for decent video work. Anything converting analog to digital on USB can't be too powerful or take enough time to do a good job since there's a max power of 2.5 watts available to USB devices. The magic of dedicated chips is good, but not that good.
So to do any good at all, the USB converters either have to drop frames, use lower compression methods that result in too high a data rate for USB and/or sacrifce the sound quality.
A PCI bus card doesn't have this problem.
