I haven't got that software you mention, but you usually right click on the video track and a menu will appear allowing you to unlink the video and audio so they can be worked on separately. When you want to do an insert edit you cut a piece of video at the in and out points and then highlight and then hit the delete key, you then just drop the new piece into the gap. The only software I can recommend is Adobe Premiere Elements or its Pro version. Yes, they are massive files but if you live near to a cyber cafe you could go in there for an hour and download it - it will only work for thirty days but you should see if you like it or not by that time.
