Final Cut Express capture problem

Final Cut Express capture problem

I am using FC Express HD and I am having a problem capturing from my XL2.
Whenever I try and capture I am getting a "Allocating Disk Space" message that just sits there. I have left it for up to an hour and it still won't get past it.
I have the latest updates on both the OS (Tiger) and FC Express. I am using a Mac Mini with 1GB of RAM and an external 160GB 7200RPM dedicated drive that is 95% empty. I tried it with my old JVC camcorder and it does the same thing so it is not the XL2.

Any ideas?
