Also, it looks like I've screwed up the settings in VirtualDub. The DVD movie is in widescreen, but it looks as if I've ripped it as 4:3. What setting did I miss - and what should I use? |
Try ripping the audio from the DVD as WAV (uncompressed), then re-muxing in Premiere. If you start a 16:9 project in Premiere, you can also interpolate the footage to strectch it back out again.

OK, team, need some more help please...
I duly ripped the DVD to my hard drive. Although I don't remember specifying any details about the rip, it looks as if it successfully ripped as a 16:9/widescreen movie.
Mark's advice seems to have been good. I renamed the .vob files as .mpg and was able to import one into Premiere. I even managed to edit it successfully - inserted a new rolling credit. However, playback was very, very erratic - miss several frames then restart, sometimes losing sound altogether.
However, the big isues were 1. Despite the ripped .vob/.avi file being 16:9/widescreen (double clicking on it caused Media Player to play it correctly as a 16:9 movie), when I imported it into Premiere, having set up a widescreen/PAL/48kHz project, it imported as a 4:3 aspect ratio image with black bars either side of the screen, and 2. Try as I might, I could only get Premiere to import one .vob/.mpg file. I could import one, get it onto the timeline and edit it - but as soon as I tried to import a second, Premiere either hung or crashed. It didn't matter which file I imported first or second - importing the second caused a hang/crash. Needless to say, these were 1GB+ files.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the 16:9 issue, and on the crash/hang when trying to import a second file?

Bump... Surely someone out there has some insight as to why a 16:9 .avi file (that was previously a 16:9 .vob file) won't import correctly into Premiere Pro?
I'm interested by the other problem - of not being able to import a second .avi file into the project - but can live without solving it: I'll just give my father a DVD with only the first 30 minutes of the movie on it, including the adapted credits.
