DV (and HD?) has a very poor contrast range and it is important to get exposures spot on. Using all auto will often result in poor results on difficult scenes, like a bright sky.
Has the camera got a zebra pattern generator, if so I suggest you use this and set exposure manually.
As said it is also likely that you may need to set up your preview monitor.
LCDs on cameras are abn unreliable way of getting a good exposure in my view. Have a gander thru the eypepiece, it may give a more reliable view.
