Perhaps looking on this link might help to get to the bottom of the problem, or identify/eliminate it.

I hope it helps!

Nice link - running out of ways to explain interlaced video, and now I don't have to!

Thanks very much for your tips.

I've tried to do like the 100fps.com guide says but I still don't get a smooth video.

In my video cars are passing a street from right to left, but it looks like frames are missing or something cause they don't move smootly from right to left. It lookslike they are moving, then stopping, and moving (very fast though but still visible).

I use a .avs-file:
AVISource("capture.avi")
complementparity
separatefields

and the Virtualdub filter "Deinterlace - Smooth".
Resolution is: 720*576, PAL

Any more tips?

Just to confirm, does the video look perfect after the initial capture?

I love your quick replys!

Well, it looks smoothed after inital capture. I'm just comparing the captured file with the "smoothed/de-interlaced" file and the first file looks smoother. The first file has mice teeths though, very visible.

When I record the video in virtualdub, the video looks very smooth in the preview window.

are you using the capture overlay in virtualdub or actually seeing the captured footage. that can be very misleading. play the captured avi file back. is that smooth apart from the interlaced fields? next de-interlace but preserve the original file format. Is that smooth? If not, you're going to have to chnage your capture settings to get smoother video.

What codec are you using to capture? There's one or two guys on the forums that would be much more help than me, but they haven't posted for a while...

Oh, I didn't notice you had posted on page two...

Well, in virtualdub, Overlay is checked (in the video menu). If I choose preview in the same menu the picture looks worse (mouse teeth and not as smooth as in overlay).

I've captured a short sequence and it looks smooth except for the mouse teeth. When I de-interlace it with the filter "Deinterlace - Smooth" it removes the teeth but the car doesn't move as smooth.

I am using ATI Rage Theater Video Capture, composite.

The preview means you actually see what is captured. How long is the video? Space permitting, try capturing using the huffy codec: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/huffyuv.html

I just tried changing the Capture settings in virtualdub from:

frame rate: 15.0002

to

framerate: 25.0000

I've deinterlaced the videofile (21 seconds) and encoded to mpeg2. It looks good on my computer, but on the TV (through my DVD player) it still looks a bit shaky (on cars moving from right to left).

I'm gonna download that codec right now and try it.

I get the same result with the new codec. There's a car moving with a text on its side, and there it's especially visible. The letters are shaking left-------->right so it's a bit hard to read.
