ALways edit on the 'raw' video, I suspect this is probably DV. DO NOT compress anything untill your work is totally finished in DV.

THEN, make versions for showing different ways using a delivery codec. This may be mpe2 for dvd or divx / wmv for web. Bit rates ect vary depending on target audience.

Some editors can edit compressed video but it never works very well.

The bit rate stated above for divx should have given you perfect results. I suspect you made an error.
