Default Editing Trouble

I have a Samsung SCD103 and PowerDirector4. Am able to record all the data from the Camcorder to my computer with the software that came with my Samsung. The problems is when I try to open the file that I just saved from my camcorder. I think that the problems is that it is in the wrong format.
How would I convert it into a file that PowerDirector4 accepts? How do you know what kind of format my camcorders sofware records the data?

Please help me!

Thank you.

Is your camcorder MiniDV or DVD format? DVD format has a .vob file extension whereas MiniDV can be captured as .avi (easiest to work with and edit in my opinion and then there is .mpeg - best left to the end when your done and ready to export to DVD and then there is Apples .mov) I would stick with the .avi (good quality pics and sound). You get to set the capture format in the software.

What he means is for your camcorder, do you put a cassette in it or a little 8cm DVD disk to record to?

The Samsung SCD103 is a MiniDV camera, so let's isolate a the obvious:

Are you captring via firewire? If you're using USB, then you won't be transferring in the optimal medium. Get a firewire cable (and card if you don't have one).

It's not as simple as this but I try to explain it in these terms.

You can often transfer video from your camcorder either through a firewire connection or through a USB connection.

If you use the USB connection you will likely get VHS quality video (this means bad). If you use firewire you will get DVD quality video (this means good). Guess which one you shouldbe using?
