PREMIERE PRO 1.5 AUDIO PROBLEM, PLEASE HELP

:( In my project window, when I split my stereo audio into two files, I can't preview my video clip with my choice of either left or right audio. I have to pick video or either of the two audio's which makes no sense. I can't sit points and decide which channel to use unless I can hear it with my video. I must be overlooking something very simple. BUT WHAT???? Please help. I have a two hour movie to cut. THANX.

Also, how can I choose which audio track on my timeline I want particular sound to go?
