Greetings all, new to the forum so I hope this is in the right place.

I’m on a big learning curve on all things editing at the moment and this forum and its guidelines are excellent info sources. I thought I’d tap in, therefore, for a bit of help from those of you that have been doing this for a while. I’ve got many hours of family video to edit and I’d be grateful, therefore, if an experienced eye could glance over this as a plan and correct me if I’m heading down the wrong path.

Current plan

1. Capture, edit and export to hard drive as AVI using Premiere Elements
2. Encode AVI to Mpeg using TMPGEnc 2.5
3. Author and burn DVD using Nero
4. Archive Mpeg to Divx

End result is a copy of final film on DVD and also archived on PC as Divx

I appreciate some of this may come down to personal preference but I’m just focusing on the steps really.


Any views on a better way of doing this before I devote a big chunk of my time to it?

One thing I'd do different is archive the AVI to DivX (or XviD) instead of the MPEG. You'll have less distortion creep in that way if you later need to recreate the MPEG.

IE -
AVI>MPEG adds distortion
AVI>DivX adds distortion
AVI>MPEG>DivX adds distortion twice. Then if you recreate the MPEG, you get the distortion a third time.
