The term "AVI" is really a generic term used to describe the container of a Windows video file. The extension AVI can mean the video is encoded with any manor of codec: from highly compressed MPEG4 codecs such as DivX, to the low compression of DV.
Make sure you choose a codec with a low compression ratio.
