Im new to this stuff so please bear with me
I just got a pansonic miniDV camcorder and i want to convert my daughter's graduation and put it onto a dvd. I have ULEAD Media Studio Pro 7, Sonic 4, and Roxio Videowave 7, and first of all, i don't even know which one to use. I tried using media studio, but it captured the video avi or dv format and it was huge. I was wondering what the difference was between these and what each one is used for.

DV avi files are going to be huge, that way it keeps the optimum quiality. From memory, i think it takes up 1GB for every 5 minutes. There isn't really a difference between DV and AVI - DV is just one of the different versions of AVI formats.

There are different MPEG video formats too, MPEG1, 2 and 4.

It's always best to do all your editing in DV format, until you're ready to output the video to DVD. It takes up a lot of space sure, but it's a price that has to be paid.
