Default Freeware for ripping audio from video

Does anyone know of any freeware that will rip audio from mpeg and other video files?

I've found some that will rip from avi, but it doesn't seem to work from mpeg

WMM2 neatly allows you to drop a video clip onto the audio track and all is well, but this isn't the case with other editing software that I'm using (PowerDirector4), so I'd love to find something that will easily accomplish this.

I'd be grateful for any pointers!

Haven't but will do, thanks for that, I'm still new to this game and don't really know my way around yet...

There's also DVD audio-ripper, a handy little tool if you want some nifty sound effects. The trial version will capture up to a few minutes - but this is fine unless you want a whole soundtrack.

I've used this. It is a great tool. Who needs sound effects CDs when you can just rip off the explosions and gunshot sounds from your fave movies eh?

Sure enough. As with many things, it's the subtle, not-so-obvious touches that can make a significant difference.

Incidental sounds, like city streets, mechanical or electronic backgrounds, or 'natural' countryside noises add a convincing air that's often barely noticed.

In big-budget films, even the most mundane of noises are not natural at all - they're all added post-production - which is why they can be so useful.
