Default firewire droped picture quality

I have in the past been recording from a sony dcr-trv 250 camera to computer via usb. I had the expected poor quality but not too pixilated just a little grainy. So I go to the firewire card to get some improvment and to my horror the quality had declined. Pixilated fierce. Im using sony screenblast editing software that saves as avis to a 80 gb HD with 52gb free. Athlon 1900 processor. So my questions are... A. could the faster transfer of the firewire cause it going to a slow HD? Should i throw another Hd in? B. Could some of this be just in my computer monitor? C. can recording to normal 8mm tapes and not the digital8 chop quality? This shouldnt have to do with the first two questions because i have had decent quality with the tapes via usb. But i questioned it for the grain.
