Default importing files

I have been useing premiere 6 for quite a while ,then I got premiere6.5 ,I used it with success ,untill lately then every now and again when I try to import [files] ,I get a freeze-up ,I have tried all combinations of
formats ,and have reinstalled it a few times.sometime with success,but I cannot find a reason for the freeze.If anyone has the answer please help.
