Default Codecs, codecs, codecs :-/

Hi folks,

I joined this forum because my knowledge regarding video editing on PC's is very limited and I'd love to know more. At the weekend myself and a friend recorded a short amount of video and quickly compiled it into an editing avi file.

Basically a situation arose which confuses me. I edited the movie on my friends machine and used one of the MPEG 4 codec installed on his machine. When I got the video's home I could play them all fine on my machine BUT, I then went to fiddle around and edit a bit more so I opened up premier and upon trying to open the files I received an error which I perceived as a usual "no codec" error (I cant remember the exact text so I don't want to potentially mislead people). Does this scenario make sense to anybody? I always assumed if you can play it, you can open it for editing, but obviously not :

Default

P.S. I read something on another thread to indicate there's three main MPEG 4 codecs, Divx,xVid and Microsoft's, I think the one involved on this occasion was the microsoft one. should I not be surprised?
