Default Newbie: Totally lost and need some basic advise! Please!

Hey video gurus,
I need to make a 60 second video presentation and wanted to basically shoot a video over which I'd later add some effects, most importantly, add photos to the video (i.e. I'd "point" to a picture which isn't actually there, and later edit the video so that the picture is there and maybe zoom in and out from it).

Does anyone know of any freeware or trial software I could use to do this? Or any tricks to do this? Or any advise in general of how I might be able to do this / do this more awesomely?!

Thanks so much!
-Ari

I don't know about free software but you can download a trial copy of Sony Vegas and use that to do a picture in picture FX.
