Default Capturing using XP Movie Maker

Had my first go at capturing DV last night and it worked!!
This is probably down to reading lots of threads on this site which helped out a lot when specing and buying my new PC last week.
Anyway, I read on this forum that 5 mins of video footage should take up approx 1Gb of HD space, but when using XP's Movie Maker it showed that it was capturing at 14Mb per minute. I am using a Firewire connection straight into the motherboard.
When I played the captured video back it was OK but not as good as the original.
My question: Why is it capturing at a slower/different rate?

regards, Stretch
