having trouble getting my video on my mac

im trying to put video from my JVC Everio GZ-HD3 to my mac for the first time. i installed the software and updated everything on my mac, but for some reason i can not playback the vids. i believe it is because they are in the wrong format as quicktime, imovie, and windows media player will not open the video files. any help would be appreciated.
