Well, having spent the last few days (and nights!) trying out the Premier 6.5 I have to admit that am finding a little complicated. Therefore I went for option 2 and downloaded the trial version of Premier Elements 4 and immediately noticed a difference. I have found it a lot easier to understand the basics and am leaning towards this as my 'learning tool' in the first instance.

The only problem I have now encountered is that I am unable to capture from my Sony Handycam via my firewire connection on the Canopus Capture card through Elements 4. The screen shows the camera as being off line, however I can capture from the camera, using Device Control through Canopus DV Capture via the same firewire connection.

I have tried everything I can think of, so if anyone can help me solve this one please, I may be able to hold on to some of my hair! I did forget to mention that I do have a dedicated 108gb drive for capturing the videos on.

Default Which Video Editing Software-APElements4?

I see where Adobe Premeire Elements 4 was suggested, I bought this program, installed and when you go to burn to disk a screen comes up and says it has encounterd a problem and that it must shut down. You then must burn to hard drive then burn the encoded files with something like Nero. I've tried everyone of the troubleshooting steps to remedy this but to no avail, just thought I would fair warn you ahead of time sine this may occur with you if you purchase it. However it is a great editing software being $99.00 American $'s.

Hello again. Since my last reply, I have found out that DVStorm2 does not work with Premier Elements 4 although Canopus DV Capture does. Unfortunately I cannot get Premier 6.5 to capture via the DVStorm 2 card. Even though I can operate the camera through the Device Control there is no video or audio during capture. I've managed to get a lot of information from Canopus Technical Support, they have been very helpful, but it appears that even they are stumped over this. Unless anyone on this forum has any additional help they can offer, I will close this thread and move. Thanks again for those who have offered their help.

Ok thanks for the warning, I'll take that into account when I make my decision. I'll try burning a dics with the trial version and see what happens. Thanks again.

You might want to try the following forums:

DVdoctor.community - Powered by vBulletin

May well be people on there who are using Premiere 6.5 + DVStorm.

One other question. It appears you can capture via the Canopus DV Capture program. If this works to ingest your DV footage to your PC, does it matter that you can't use either Elements or 6.5 to capture?

I currently use WinDV to capture from miniDV tapes rather than any supplied NLE capture program. Before that, when I used Premiere 5.1, I had a copy of Scenalyzer.

Thanks for the reply, yes I will try DVDoctor forums and see what I can find. I'm beginning to think the same regarding DVCapture, although that has stopped working as well now! I can't use WinDV as it is not compatible with the DVStorm cards. I will keep persevering in the hope that I will find the solution. I appreciate the suggestions I have received from you and other members who have offered help.

Forgive me if I am getting the wrong end of the stick here, but why do you need a capture card?
If it is miniDV and firewire, then surely you just need a firewire card.

You may need a DV codec though, this one should work with all miniDV cameras AFAIK.
