download optura 40 with Vista

I just bought a used Canon Optura 40, and it came with Pinnacle Studio 9 CD. The pinnacle site says that these older versions won't run on Vista. I have vista Ultimate, and I also have the Adobe CS3 package. Is there a way to download my video from my minidv tapes to my computer without buying the latest Pinnacle?

Do you just want to capture to your PC or do you want to edit? DVIO is a free stand alone DV capture application.

I want to capture first, then I can worry about editing. Both Windows movie make and Adobe Premiere have "Import" functions, but my computer is not recognizing the firewire connection. When I browse through computer for the device, there is nothing. I wonder if Vista just isn't recognizing it??? I have used my ipod with that firewire port, so I know it works. Vista always gives problems for older devices and software.
