Default Pops on audio peaks - Nero/Ulead - Sony Camcorder

I have recently started having a problem whereby video recorded on my sony camcorder (DCR-SR80 - files are MPEG4) results in frequent loud static "pops" seemingly on audio peaks when playing back video clips in Nero or in ULead.

It doesn't happen if the same clips are played back directly from the camcorder to my stereo or if they are played using RealPlayer or WindowsMedia Player. However, the two choices I have for editing and rendering DVDs (ULead and Nero) have the problem!

I even reinstalled Nero on a separate machine and the same symptom occurs.

It worked fine the last time i made a dvd some 6 months ago.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
