Default NTSC to PAL video quality issue?

I have a SONY PC330 MiniDV Handycam bought in the US (so NTSC format), trying to video edit using CyberLink PowerDirector v5. It automatically converts through to PAL format ok, but I'm not happy with final produced video quality - loss of resolution and quite grainy. Have tried a lot of the producing video setting 'options'. Is this loss of quality due to the NTSC to PAL conversion, or am I doing something wrong. Many thanks..
