Question How to edit the best quality of HD H.264 from Sony HD-SR1?

I need help at different level.

1- the best link to transfert the Sony SR1 file in HD except HDMI my latop has only HDMI output. (a stupidity from HP with the new HDX laptop anyway)

2- What is the best software who can handle H.264 on the market. I'm not a pro but I learn fast.

3- the best format to store the data. Quality is very importante for me. the Hard disk of the SR1 is 30G. I'm scared to transfert the file in the wrong format. I need to erase the disk which is full.

ANYONE? your help will be welcome!
