This problem is driving me nuts.
I have a Sony TRV17 miniDV cam coonected to my pc via firewire. I am using Windows movie maker to capture. I do the following steps:
select capture from video device
slecting the cam and hitting next
sepcify file name and folder
selecting best quality for playback on my computer
selecting capture entire tape automatically and show preview during capture
It shows that its rewinding the tape and it rewinds it and then when it starts capturing an error comes up as "An unknown error has occured". This happens all the time no matter what i do.
Now the confusing thing is I did capture a 20 minute video with windows movie maker about a month ago with the same settings. I tried to capture the same video (from the same tape) again but it gave the above error.
It recognizes the camera and rewinds the tape, but just does not capture!
Any suggestions??
one thing the recording was done using LP mode, but i think it should not effect capturing.
HLP please.

To isolate windows movie maker from the problem download and run DVIO - http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm and use that to try and capture.

I downloaded that program. After specifying the name of the file and hit capture video from camera. I get the following message:
DVIO MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
and then the choice of sending or not sending the report.
I tried it over and over again with rebooting the system, but the same error message comes up.

Have you installed any new software or hardware since the last time you managed to capture some video?
Which operating system are you using?

No, I did not install anyhting after that. I am running Win XP Pro.
I also tried using the software that came with camera. With that I can control the camera, like play, forward, stop etc. But when I try to capture... again an error. With this software the errror says something like "could not find the module". and at that time you can see on the camera the first frame frozen.
It seems like some setting has changed on the camera, which the softwares don't like.
Are you suggesting I try re-installing Win XP or just Windows movie maker?
Tonight I will try it with another computer and see what happens.

Another freebie capture program you might like to try from http://windv.mourek.cz/
I have found it very good, and use it as my first choice -- it's only small, and doesn't need to be installed - just run it from the .exe file
