Simple software questions for simple need... thanks for any help

Wow!!!! There is a lot of info on here. I tried to narrow down the posts to find info on what I need to do. I think my question is very basic for this site so appologies in advance...

Our family camcorder recorders to mini-DVD's. I want to post the videos to our family website. Problem is that one 30 min min-DVD is over 1gig. No way that will work.

So can someone please point me in the right direction for a solution that will take my mini-DVD's and convert them to something that is better suited for posting our website?

I am somewhat knowledgable and do write my one HTML code (though I give in with FrontPage for the basic page formating, etc.)

I really hope there is a simple way to pull from our home DVD movies and make them into segments that we can post on our site in smaller sizes.

I have been making our pics into slide shows though now want to put up the vid.

If you have windoz, then you have movie maker. The dvd camcorder records to mpeg 2 which dose not edit well so the quilty will suffer. but you can compress to wmv or quick time or divx for that matter.
