I agree Noa, the best best thing to do if you have a badly damaged tape is to dump it, its not worth the risk to reuse it.
As for saying you can't do anything about footage that has glitches like that, i dissagree on that point as i have retrieved footage for clients with bad glitches like that (of course it depends on the extent of the damage) if its just isolated frames its OK,,,,,,,You take a still of the frame, import it into Photoshop, patch up the blocks, import the corrected frame or frames back on to the Timeline above the defect frame or frames, they will play instead of the bad frames, its not perfect but it is watchable.
It takes a long time and it is expensive, it depends how desperate the footage is

I agree that this timeconsuming patchwork does work to a certain degree, if it's worth you should try it like this, for example with very important footage were you simply cannot cut it away you should at least try. As long as you don't make it worse it's ok |

Many thanks to you all. For the record I did the following:
I cleaned the heads, this did make an improvement but I was still recording occasional noisy tape.
I switched from LP to SP. This did the trick and the recorded footage is now smooth!
I still have the problem of 30 minutes of recorded material that I hope to clean up but doing it frame by frame in Photoshop would take years. I will just have to hope someone produces software to speed up this process!

It is theoretically possible to take the individual frame from the film that is marred, and edit out the macroblocks in Photoshop, then reinsert it.

I think I may have the same problem. I've ran the cleaner cassette, I think right now that it is the tape and not the camera because sections of the tape still work fine. I'm going to buy new tape tomarrow to see if it helps, I definately see this as a light at the end of the tunnel though for my search in finding out what it is that is wrong. I hope this works.
