Default Avid makes copy of every video file I import???

Hello, I was jus trying to learn how to use this version of Avid i got (Avid_Xpress_Pro_2003_v4.01). My problem is whenever I try to capture video or work on an already captured video Avid makes a copy of the file to a folder on my drive. This wouldnt be a problem if I had 1000 Gigs of space but I dont! Do I not have a setting set properly or does AVID always have to make a copy of the file your working on??? When I use Adobe Premiere everything works fine. I dont have to have 2 copies of the file to work on. Please HELP...
Thnx

*My system specz... PIV 2.4GHZ, 1GB DDR RAM, 250 Gig 7200RPM HD, GeForce FX5600 Ultra video card, Firewire, 4x DVD burner, Echo Audio Soundcard...
