Default downloaded images gets squashed

I have recorded a couple of hours footage from a recent holiday and want to compilate a dvd of our experience. I have a Panasonic gs 180 and used cinema mode on 4:3. (the colour seemed better for some reason). I have tried about 4 programs to edit with and all squash the image to what appears as widescreen.ie ulead/microsoft and a couple of others. I tried using normal mode and editing and it was fine(no squashing of the picture). I just don't want the image to be squashed just viewable as it is on the camera or played direct to the TV. I have played with settings/preferences but to no avail. Some will download OK and as soon as I add to the timeline they squash. I don't have a great amount of knowledge in this area just what I have picked up from forums and the like.(I use firewire)

Any Help
Thanks
