Some dv editing programs capture into AVI format while others use MPG. If there is a choice, which is better, and why?
Hope someone can help.

Think I would be correct in saying that its always better to capture and work with the full DV-AVI as this is the uncompressed digital data exactly as it is stored on the camera, mpeg on the other hand will be compressed and therfore will have a drop in the quality of your final output.
I'm sure some of the more techie guys on here can give a fuller explanation of the differences, but basically DV-AVI is the way to go.

If you want to edit the video at all and are concerned with quality, DV-AVI is the ONLY way to go.

One thing you should know is that although you're obviously best editing in AVI, if it goes to DVD at the end, you will need to render the edited file to MPEG as that is the DVD standard.
