Unhappy 16:9 avi will only play as 4:3 on mac

Ok here goes: I owned a PC up until last week. I also have a sony dcr-hc90e, which I've been using to film quite a few clips. I then firewired all of them on my PC and used WMM to edit and finally create AVI files. I bought my mac late last week and one of the first things I tried to do was to import one of the AVIs in iMovie. I created a new project (PAL widescreen) and imported the AVI, but it shows up as 4:3! I tinkered with a few options, imported again a few times, nothing. Funny thing is, my AVI file even plays as 4:3 in quicktime....

Please help!! I'm a new dad and have a ton of videos of my almost 8-month-old son that I can only access as 4:3 now on my mac!!!!

Thanks.
