Default Black Border help

right i am not sure if this is the correct place for this,

but what i am trying to do is capture Video from my Xbox or PS2

i have a Belkin "High Speed USB-2 DVD Creator" capture Device
and i have tried using

Windows Movie Maker
Ulead Movie factory 5
Ulead DVD Workshop 2

the problem i am having is that every program i use i set the capture settings to
640*480 (4:3) but instead of it capturing the whole image, it only captures half of it,
as in there is a black box on the left hand side and there then on the right hand side there is a big chunk of the screen missing, its almost as if the device is out of alignment, anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it.
