(I've been given an old G4 tower to play with)

Heh... the head of our department is a huge Apple enthusiast, it's actually his old one because he's bought a Mac Mini for his office, so he gave his old one to us (866MHZ, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, Combi drive).

So, after setting it up, I played a trick on my boss (not the same person as above) this morning. I knew he was going to be in late, so I hid the G4 under his desk, connected up the Mac to his monitor, rather than his usual windows based PC, and left the "about this mac" screen on it. He got in, turned his monitor on, looked confused for a couple of seconds, sighed then started laughing

I'm using it now, and I am quite impressed with the way it works.

So does anyone know of any realistic comparisons with how a Mac's video editing capability compares with a windows PC?

If the Mac has been well looked after and maintained.
The disks are in good condition and it's a reasonable CPU then there is no contest. Get a demo of After FX and render summat off and you will see.

I always use a simple text transition and test the same project on diff machines. Mac's have always won hands down.
